Skin Problems?
At the end of every Summer,
our phones start ringing. "What can I do about the brown
spots on my skin?" "My skin took a beating this summer. Can
you help?"Skin texture and color are
primary concerns for just about everyone. What solutions are
out there, what are their effectiveness levels and how are
they priced?
We'll start at the top from both
effectiveness, quickness of action and cost levels and work our way down.

- CO2 Laser - ActiveFX and DeepFX are the top level
skin rejuvenation procedures. These powerful laser
treatments dramatically shorten the
time required to correct multiple problems at once.
Procedure targets are pigmentation
irregularities, poor skin texture, fine to moderate wrinkles, scars and sagging
skin.
Theses lasers work by removing micro-columns
of sun-damaged skin at variable depths and size and are
highly specific to the results you wish to obtain. ActiveFX
is for superficial concerns while DeepFX offers appreciable
skin tightening power. Combing both in TotalFX offers
tightening plus superficial to midlevel resurfacing.
Most patients only require a single procedure.

- Fraxel Laser - A non-CO2 laser
which "coagulates" skin tissue in micro-columns. No
tissue is removed, but the visual effects are similar in
smoothing scarred skin, refreshing skin tone, treating
melasma, pigmentation and fine wrinkles. Fraxel is typically a
multi-session approach since the downtime is
nonexistent or minimal at best.

- IPL Photofacials are pulsed light
treatments which make use of specific wavelengths of
intense light to resolve both diffuse red and brown
discoloration. IPL can be used anywhere on the body and
is a great treatment for sunspotted face, chest, arms,
hands or back.
At the end of summer, when tans fade, often blotchy
spots and redness remain. This left over sun damage then
becomes very noticeable as the "tan" cells are no longer
activated by summer sun exposure. IPL Photofacial is a series based
treatment system as most pigmentation is deeply enough
entrenched in the skin to require several sessions.

- Chemical Peels and/or Microdermabrasion
are designed to remove superficial skin cells so that
the fresher, less damaged skin cells beneath are
revealed.
Chemical peels can be a series of light peels
with no downtime to deeper peels like the medical
strength Refinity Glycolic or Jessner Peels (which does entail obvious peeling).
- Microdermabrasion is a manual process
of "sand blasting" old skin cells from the face, neck
and chest.
Microdermabrasion uses ultrafine particles to
smooth the skin and help lessen the appearance of
pigmentation variations.
- Topical Systems such as
Cosmelan
or
Obagi
NuDerm
are
effective for blending pigmentation and skin
rejuvenation. Both require a commitment to product use
over a substantial length of time but from a cost
perspective are the most economical for obtaining an
improvement in superficial skin appearance.

How Does It Work?

IPL Photofacial
"The
first flash of light really surprised me. (I see why you
call it intense light!) But what really surprised me was how
much of the ugly brown splotchiness is gone from my face and
chest.
My arms
and hands are next in line. And yes, Dr. Mani, I promise to
use my sunscreen every day.
Thanks for all your valuable
advice and for explaining all the options. This has worked
beautifully for me."

How IPL Works
The "color" in skin, whether it is red color from tiny broken
blood vessels, or brown from melanin pigment, will absorb
certain wavelengths of laser light energy. In an IPL
treatment, the absorbed energy raises the temperature of those specific cells to cause
a direct response. In the case of melanin (brown
discoloration) this response if a
shattering of the pigment.
Deeper level damaged blood vessels are coagulated from
the heat. The coagulation closes off the tiny vessels which are
then absorbed by the body.
Both red and brown areas are treated at the same time.
