The Way to More Effective Acne Treatment

From the American Academy of Dermatology "One thing that can worsen acne is poor skin care. Even acne-fighting medication cannot overcome poor skin care."

From misunderstanding how to use acne medication to expecting an overnight cure, there are seemingly countless ways to sabotage an acne program. If you are in an acne program and not getting the best response, pay attention to the guidelines on the linked page below.

Patients with resistant or severe nodular acne are referred to an Acne Specialist who works in tandem along with Dr. Mani. Very deep seated acne requires the attention of a physician who specializes in controlling Levels 4 and beyond. If it's determined your acne needs more serious intervention, Dr. Mani will refer you to this specialist.

Once the acne is under control, treatments can begin in our clinic for restoring your skin to the best possible surface smoothness and appearance by resolving post acne redness, scarring and skin texture irregularities.

Acne Scar Reduction with Fraxel or ActiveFX
Skin Texture Improvement with ActiveFX or Microdermabrasion
Scar "fill" with Restylane or Juvederm - Immediately offers a nonpermanent option to filling scars of various depth.

How Does It Work?

Topical Depigmentation for Blotchy Skin

Why does my skin get dark spots?

Blotchy skin and brown spots are a huge concern to most women. The causes are varied with the biggest causative factor being unprotected sun exposure. Hormonal changes are a close second with hormonal melasma being compounded by the sun.

Melanin is the "color" in our skin and hair and we all have different amounts of melanin according to our ancestry and genes. It is the excessive production of melanin that causes skin to discolor.

Sun acts as a catalyst for the melanin-producing cells.

Because your skin attempts to protect itself from the damage caused by the sun, you will "tan"  However, in short order, the melanin production can become disorganized, DNA changes occur and rather than producing a smooth color, your skin becomes blotchy and spotty.

What can I do about it?

Your first step is to start protecting your skin with ample sunscreen. The most effective contain Titanium Dioxide and / or Zinc Oxide. These are natural micronized minerals and have the least likelihood of causing a reaction. Plus, mineral sunscreens are effective the minute you put them on.

With all the time sunscreen use you should see some gradual improvement, although if you have dermal concentrated melanin deposits,  the time it takes to see a difference can be disheartening. That's where a proven Depigmentation program can be a "face saver".

Cosmelan, in our opinion, is the most effective and safest proven depigmentation program. Cosmelan works by first peeling the surface pigment then utilizing various non-prescription ingredients which act together to inhibit the production of new melanin. This is extremely important! Only by turning off the melanin cells will your skin have a chance to revert back to an acceptable balance of color.

Community Outreach

CyMo Foundation

This past week Dr. Mani and her staff joined the CyMo Foundation at Jack's in La Jolla for a fund raising benefit. CyMo was established following the loss of a much loved son, Cyrus Moinzadeh
, who died from a drug overdose in late 2007. The CyMo Foundation funds efforts to increase public awareness of drug use and addiction and helps underwrites professional treatment for young people who need help in redirecting lives controlled by drugs.

As a participating sponsor, Dr. Mani contributed $4500 in gift certificates and procedure values that were auctioned at the event to raise funds for expanding the capabilities of this worthwhile community outreach.
