The Old Standby Has a New Remodel - Glycolic Acid for Skin Renewal

Glycolic Acid has been around for many years. Most everyone knows its purpose is to exfoliate the top layer of skin cells. But what does exfoliation accomplish and how?

Glycolic Acid - Old Version

Once applied, glycolic acid reacts with the upper layer of the epidermis, weakening the binding properties of the lipids that hold the dead skin cells together. This allows the outer skin "glue" to dissolve revealing the underlying skin that's smoother with better clarity and color and clearer pores.

It's been a great staple product for years. But...(there's always a 'but" isn't there?) The glycolics that were available for home use had to be a low % level, usually under 10%, so that people didn't irritate or burn their skin.  Most of the products you can buy over the counter are buffered to the a level that is in such a minimal strength range the results you get are almost unnoticeable. Levels over 10% were nearly always only available in glycolic peels that had to be administered in a doctor's office or by a licensed esthetician.

Glycolic Acid - New Version

The introduction of partially neutralized glycolic acid products has opened the door for very effective exfoliation without the same risks of irritation. With medical level products like VIVITE, which contain 15% glycolic acid, you can essentially give yourself professional level results with products you use at home.

Effective glycolic products accomplish more than just exfoliation. Since skin that is not hampered by dead skin cells can function better and glycolic acid binds water to the skin, you typically very quickly see an increase in moisture retention - which affects plumpness and wrinkle depth; pore clarity since the pores can release trapped sedum and oil; more even color as surface pigment cells are removed; and and overall brightening since the irregular rough cells are no longer trapping the reflection of light.

VIVITÉ has become a patient favorite because it provides a very effective level of exfoliation along with some very innovative ingredients that make it a multi-effect product line.
 Included in the ingredient lineup:

Peptides -Tightens skin
Superoxide dismutase - (SOD), a leading-edge antioxidant, Traps free radicals
Salicylic Acid - Exfoliates to remove unproductive skin cells
Exfoliating microbeads - More thoroughly removes unproductive skin
Interference pearls - Diffuses light and brighten dark under-eye circles

 Aging Hands

A Simple Approach to Hand Rejuvenation

No One Wants Cruella DeVil’s Hands

If you saw the animated movie “101 Dalmatians”, one thing you probably noticed was Cruella DeVil’s hands. Of course hers were age-exaggerated and most of us never look like that, but the truth of it is - our hands DO give the world a pretty good indication of how old we are.

We usually aren’t as focused on the issue, so often we’re taken by surprise when one day we notice just how much our hands have changed. The main culprits in hand aging are volume (fat) loss and UV damage, both of which in Southern California are accelerated by the sunny day lifestyle.

What happens? Veins become more prominent as the fat cushion around them sinks, the bony structures start to protrude and years of sun exposure cast a wide net of spots and dots. It would be nice if we could gain weight only in our hands, but that’s not how things work, so the next best option is a fat substitute- placed exactly where you need it.

Long lasting cosmetic fillers or collagen stimulators act as a “fat replacement” and are easy to use. When injected under the skin on the backs of the hands, the hills and valleys caused by veins and bones become less noticeable, giving the hands a plumper, younger appearance. Add laser to remove brown spots and the combined procedures provide a very respectable total hand rejuvenation.

Dr. Fitzgerald on the Go

Dr. Fitzgerald is frequently on the go. Just in the past month she was in London, England heading up the debut of Sculptra in the UK. In her role as a senior trainer for Dermik Laboratories, Dr. Fitzgerald travels around the country and around the world teaching other physicians proper techniques for injecting Sculptra.

June 5-8 she presented her findings on Facial Volumizers and Collagen Stimulators to the hundreds of physicians attending the Skin Disease Education Foundation's seminar on Cosmetic and Rejuvenative Dermatology.
